Feeling the love & Lazy trumps everything

You guys (who responded on FB) brought me to tears, the good kind. It is nice to have such great support. Please do feel free to comment here.

Ok, so yesterday I made my mind up to make changes, and as Dani pointed out in her comment to my first post, I need to make small ones. I used to be the type of person who tried to make all the changes at once (I am gonna take diet pills, drink 88oz of water, exercise 2hrs a day, only eat baked chicken breast and veggies.... ugh!) and that is one of the reasons I have continuously failed. My biggest problem with myself is that I know what I need to do to be healthy, I just don't do it. That is because LAZY TRUMPS EVERYTHING! Lazy is easy.

So here is a list of things that I should do (and WILL do in the coming weeks/months/years) - in no particular order:
  1. Drink more water - I like drinking water so this is really no problem, I just have to DO it.
  2. Exercise regularly - I have a habit of exercising for about 2 weeks then quitting; I don't know why I quit.
  3. Get 8 hours of sleep - I am a night owl. This is about to change when Lupe's work schedule shifts to 6:30am - 3:30pm.
  4. Stop eating late at night - this should easily rectify itself for the same reasons as above.
  5. Eat 5+ servings of fruits/veggies a day - I love fresh food, good food, even raw food. I am not that picky of an eater. I am just lazy and convenience foods are made for the lazy.
  6. This is a hard one - Spend less time in front of the computer/TV - I have to make a REALLY conscious effort here. I love socializing and the 'net has made it SO easy to while away a few hours chatting to various friends scattered about the globe. I don't watch a lot of TV, don't even have cable... so this is really about the time I spend online. There, I said it.
Each of these things should be easy to integrate into my daily living. It looks easy enough here in blog posting land, but I know that it isn't as easy as it looks at first. Yesterday I did stock up on lots of fresh fruit and veggies and have a menu for the week all set up in my head. So, I am off to a good start. Now, about getting away from the computer...

  1. Sounds like a good start, Mylynka. Remember, every little thing you do differently is better that what you were doing before. The list is good (I know I am a perpetual list maker), but try picking one thing on that list and focus on that until you've created a habit...then move on to another item.

  2. yea, that is my plan. I also need to start eating breakfast and plan healthy snacks into my day. All of the above are really easy to integrate into my day, so I am pretty positive about it.

  3. Okay, so here's another suggestion on your list. With the things you have listed, I think it's easier to stop doing something, than to add something to your daily routine. So I would begin with 4) stop eating late at night and combine it with 6) less computer time. Right there you've mastered 2 on your list and you can be bold and try one of those add-ons. Start with 3) get 8 hours of sleep. Who doesn't like to sleep? After 2 weeks when these 3 items have become a habit, look at that! You've got half your list accomplished! Then you can move on to 1) drink more water, then 5) eat more fruit/veggies. And finally the hardest...exercise.

  4. hi sugar! ok, so, i am SO on board with you and totally inspired, and you're awesome. i have a couple of comments/suggestions. 1. do you have a farmer's market near you, or the option to get a CSA box? that's a good way to find fresh, interesting foods you can experiment with--and most of them are great to just eat raw if you don't have the time/energy to experiment. try www.101cookbooks.com for some wonderful recipes, it's my favorite cooking site, and not all vegan either. :) also, bryant terry (or terry bryant, can't remember) has a vegan soul food cookbook that puts a healthy twist on some southern favorites, definitely worth a look. 2. i have a great way for you to get out from in front of the tv/computer--get some audiobooks. even if you just wander around your neighborhood or do some gardening, or play on the playground, you still have the intellectual/electronic diversion you crave but you're also doing physical things. and it's fun! :) you rock!

  5. I'm just laughing at the "I can't quit you" comment. I HATED that movie but that line makes me laugh when used the way you did!!!! Knowing your lifestyle, I think another goal would be to eat out less. I know that for me, I have a hard time making good choices when eating out. It's so tempting to eat stuff that isn't as healthy not to mention the big portions. Plus you will save $$$!

Jeanne (I don't know how to change the name on the google accout from JBL, tried and couldn't get it to work, will have to have my tech support show me)

  6. @Elisa - I have two Farmer's Markets nearby, one here in Grand Prairie on Saturday's and one in Arlington Fri -Sat. I haven't gone yet to the big daily on in Dallas yet. I got some yummy squash, zucchini, potatoes, onions, and cantaloupe last week. I am looking forward to what may be there this week! It is PEACH time! :) The audio book idea is great - I can get some from the campus or local library and put on my iPod! THANKS!

@Jeanne - yea dining out is hard. Lupe & I have been *trying* to split entrees when we go out because the portions are SO huge everywhere. The devil has been the near daily fast food. That has to stop. Or at least become a 1x/month thing or something like that. Lupe working days is going to help with eating at home! He will be here and I can cook for us EVERY night! Save dining out for a Fri or Sat night! :)

  7. Sounds like you're off to a good start! I'm starting off slowly with integrating my workouts. I'll hit the gym maybe twice this week, but I'll go up to three times next week. And I'll slowly stretch those from an hour to perhaps 90 minutes. I'm drinking more water too, though that could improve.

  8. Mylynka, I agree with Robin ~ it's easier to do the give and take rather than completely giving up a bunch of stuff or adding a lot of stuff. That being said, it looks like you're off to a good start and you know you have my support and encouragement.
